NFS Server (pc help)

OpenSuse NFS Server

This tutorial is based on you running Suse on both computers, I myself am using OpenSuse Slick I got it on a 4gb DVD it is quite good. I will also say I myself use kde i don't bother with gnome I think its crap. Anyway here goes.

SERVER  SETUP

Step 1:

Click on the K menu button at the bottom left of your screen, scroll up to "System" and left click with your mouse. Now scroll across and left click on (Yast)

Step 2:

You now have a new window in front of you which is called the (Yast2 Control Centre) you will see you have several options on your left hand side, left click on the one that says "Network Services" now just to your right you can see there is a selection of Network options, you need to left click on the one that says "NFS Server"

Step 3:

You will now have another window in front of you called the "NFS Server Configuration" here you are given 2 options "Start"    or

"Do not start" by default you will notice there is already a highlighted mark on "Start" you can just leave this alone and click on next which is located at the bottom of the window

Step 4:

You will now have a new window in front of you called "Directories to Export" it is here you need to decide what directories you would like to use with NFS  so left click on the button that says "Add Directory" this will open up a small box with a button on it which says "Browse" if you left click on this button it will open a file browser from here you can choose yourself what it is you would like to share using NFS. I can not decide this for you but I will say a lot of people tend to just share there home directory, i myself just share a couple one for music another for programmes. Now just so I can make my point I will share my "/home/master/Desktop/information/" just so you can understand what I have shared i will tell you I went to my home directory selected the user master went to my Desktop and located a folder called "information" I then clicked on "OK" My "Directories to Export" window, now has an entry for the share "/home/master/Desktop/information/" So know click on "Finish" you have now exported a directory. If you want to know about permissions for NFS you will have to look at my Security section.
